CHAPTER SEVEN

"That's perverted," I hissed, unable to look away from the images of me throughout my life, especially on in particular.

Lucian noticed my interest and slowed it down to regular speed.

It was the night I thought I'd killed my parents.

My family and I watched the SUV's coming down our dirt road. My parents told Justin to take me inside. He told me to hide, but I couldn't stay away long and found my way outside.

Kai was there. And Colin and Dr. Foster. Kai punched my brother, Justin in the face. He hadn't been a bystander but participated in the fight with magic and fists everywhere. More of those loyal to the Royals appeared, and my family was on the ground. All of them bloodied. My mom was crying and trying to protect Justin. They put magical cuffs on my family and hauled them into the vehicles. Then Dr. Foster came for me, walking toward me cautiously. I was crying. My magic glowed along my fingerstips, a bright silver. I put my hands out like I would send the magic into Dr. Foster, but Kai stepped in front of him. I hesitated.

He's beautiful, I thought.

"It's okay, Harla. Everything is going to be fine," Kai said, keeping his voice calm.

And then I felt a prick on my arm.

The image shifted, and I was in a hospital room like the one the Royals had brought me to. The Royals appeared and spoke heatedly with Dr. Foster and Kai. It felt like days or months went by that Dr. Foster would inject me with the same thing until finally, he came in looking excited.

"Harla, please understand that I must take your memories. It's the only way to keep you safe until you're old enough to appreciate what happened and why."

"I don't want to forget my family," I'd cried.

"Oh, you won't," he said. "You'll only forget what happened the night we took you."

"But my parents and Justin? I need them." I cried harder.

"They aren't your real family, Harla. In time, you'll learn the truth, and the truth, as they say, will set you free." Then he injected me.

"Turn it off." I felt sick. So many people had lied to me. Even the Flint's. From the beginning, my life had been nothing but falsehoods and fabrications.

You see. Let's stay. It’s better here. If we beg, Lucian might learn to like us again.

No, I said back. Life on Earth is still better than in this place.

She didn't seem convinced but didn't say more.

"If you live a thousand years, Kai will never know you like I do. He'll never love you the way I can. And someday, if you stay with him, you'll have regrets about your life." Lucian’s voice was soft and tender, as though he sincerely meant what he said.

"But the point is, I'll live. Now send me back, you son-of-a-bitch." I crossed my arms, hoping I looked more courageous than I felt.

He chuckled, the sound echoing through the room and stinging my ears. His features twisted into something sinister and scary.
